Wakefield is a city located in the North West of England, 10 miles south of Leeds and dates back to 1888 when it traded in corn, coal mining and textiles. It was also previously an important market town and centre for wool, exploiting it's close proximity to the River Calder for mills that were powered by steam. Within it's district, Wakefield contains the important '5 towns' as they are known locally; Pontefract, Castleford, Featherstone, Normanton and Knottingley.

Prominent landmarks in Wakefield include Wakefield Cathedral, featuring the tallest spire in Yorkshire, as well as tourist attractions Yorkshire Sculpture Park and the National Coalmining Museum. Wakefield is also home to The Ridings Centre, the UK's first template for a modern shopping centre which was replicated throughout the country.

The Theatre Royal is another point of interest in Wakefield, first opened in 1894 as an Opera House, and currently hosts a variety of entertainment including musicians, stand-up and live music. Wakefield is known as the capital of the Rhubarb Triangle, an area notable for growing early forced rhubarb and hosts the annual 'Wakefield Festival of Food, Drink and Rhubarb' every February.

Since 2007, various regeneration projects have been active in Wakefield, including the retail Trinity Walk development and the Wakefield Waterfront which features The Hepworth Wakefield art gallery. The gallery attracted 500,000 visitors and added around £10 million to the local economy.
